Student Debt Management
Almost all college students will have to face debt sometime during their education. However, this doesnt mean that we should not do whatever we can to avoid debt. Here are some alternatives to student loans, tips on how to pay off student loans if you do have them, and good money saving habits.
Avoiding Loans:
The best alternative to getting a student loan is to get a scholarship or grant. Scholarships can be found nearly everywhere and are awarded for various reasons. Look for scholarships at the college you want to attend (or are attending), at local businesses and organizations, and on the internet.
Some of the businesses and organizations that offer scholarships are the Lions Club, Junior League, Girls & Boys Club, and Retail Stores. Some great internet sites that will search for scholarships for you are FastWeb.com, Scholarships.com, and FreeScholarshipGuide.com. You can apply for a grant at fafsa.ed.gov.
Another alternative to getting a student loan is to find a high paying full time job during the summer and a part-time job during the school year. Assess your abilities, talents, and skills to find a job that's perfect for you.
Repaying Loans:
If repaying your student loans as painlessly as possible is your goal, consider the following recommendations. It may be hard for the first little while, but soon a good habit will form and it will become simple and easy:
-Lock in a Low Rate: Take the time to search for a low interest rate loan and then make sure the rate is locked in.
-Pay Through School: Many student loans don't obligate you to pay through school, however, you should do it anyway. This will save a lot of money.
-Don't Miss Payments: Missing one or two payments may seem harmless, but soon you will be in a bad habit and bad habits are hard to break.
-Make Large Payments: If you pay more than the required amount you'll have that loan paid off much faster.
Smart Shopping
The majority of debt problems come because of our bad habits. Some individuals barely scrape by regardless of how much they make. This continues to happen because they have bad spending habits.
The best way to kill these old habits is to create new ones. Try looking for sales, buying from discount stores, eating at restaurants less frequently, and going to matinees instead of evening movies. Certain movie theaters give discount tickets people with student ID's. If it's possible, share an apartment with many people. Try to live without a vehicle and ride a bike or walk instead. This will save lots of gas money. Whenever you go shopping consistantly ask the question "Do I truly need it?" before you put any item into your cart and never shop for groceries when you're hungry.
Don't cheat your future self by racking up the debt during your college years. Follow the advice given in this article and you'll get out of college with little or no debt. You'll be thankful you made the decision!
